Trained to fill a niche

With economic pressures taking their toll, companies need to carefully consider what resources they put into training and developing staff, according to recruiter Amanda Rensford.
“Companies really need to think about how to cleverly spend on their training. They need to make sure they’re re-evaluating to make sure it is cost effective and top quality,” says Rensford, co-director of Star Source.
With a background in learning and development, Rensford and her business partner Stephanie Taylor are launching a new recruitment company to help organisations find the best training solutions and training providers for their needs.
Taylor says once they noticed a gap in the market for such services, the most challenging aspect of setting up their company was making sense of all the information available for establishing a small business. So Taylor and Rensford underwent their own training program.
Taylor’s advice to those looking to set up their own small business is to try not to be overwhelmed and to really examine what networks are available around you.
“You have to look at your network and contacts and look at what information you can tap into via those nearest and dearest to you, and don’t be afraid of doing that,” says Taylor.
